ABOUT

Art House chronicles an extraordinary life dedicated to living with art, and a friendship devoted to designing homes to honor it. One of the world’s leading art collectors, Chara Schreyer has built a staggering collection of six hundred works, and her forty-year collaboration with interior designer Gary Hutton has produced five spectacular residences to house them. Art House is a breathtaking visual tour of these houses, which range from an architectural tour-de-force to a high-rise “gallery as home.”

Informed by scholarship and a passion for the conceptual, Schreyer’s collection spans all media and includes masterpieces by artists including Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Man Ray, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and Eva Hesse, as well as work by contemporary artists including Gedi Sibony, Rachel Harrison, Glenn Ligon, Christian Marclay, and many others. Art House features a rare and intimate look at hundreds of these works at home in spaces designed to be both intellectually and materially empathetic with them.

With original photography by nationally renowned photographer Matthew Millman, text by Alisa Carroll, editor in chief of San Francisco’s leading design magazine, SFC&G, and foreword by Neal Benezra, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Art House is an inspiration for art and design lovers alike.

Chara Schreyer is one of the world’s leading modern and contemporary art collectors. ArtNews has named her to its list of Top 200 collectors for the past 15 years. Her historic collection includes works by both icons and emerging 21st century artists. Based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Schreyer is on the boards of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) and the Hammer Museum, and is a patron of many art organizations. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley. Deeply committed to arts education, she has personally toured over 200 groups through her collections at her five homes.

Gary Hutton is one of the country’s top interior designers, sought after for his artful, conceptual approach. His visionary projects include residences for leading collectors, CEOs and tastemakers, as well as the interiors for the new San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design. His furniture collection, which marks its 30th anniversary this year, is represented at showrooms in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and beyond. He studied fine art at UC Davis with artists Manuel Neri and Wayne Thibaud, and holds a graduate degree in design from California College of the Arts (CCA).
